Get your grain cart ready for harvest season!

The grain cart is a diligent piece of equipment that works hard during harvest season. As it is an important piece in the process, you’ll want to be sure it is in good condition before putting it to work. Follow these preseason maintenance tips to sustain its quality condition.

-          Inspect augers for noticeable wear; over time, augers will become smaller in diameter, weakening their performance as a whole. Inspect for wear particularly where grain transitions from the horizontal to vertical auger or from the lower to upper vertical auger. These regions are high wear areas and when worn, cause slow unload times and extra tension on other components of the cart.

-          Check the PTO/drive belts; ensure they are accurately adjusted and that the serviceable parts of the PTO shafts are sufficiently greased. Check alignment and for heavy cracks in the grooves. Be sure linkage is free to move, engages, and disengages easily.

-          Check the gearbox oil; check oil level and condition, replace if needed.

-          Scale accuracy; inspect all grain cart scale wires for damage

-          Hydraulic hoses; look for visible wear spots or leaks

-          Safety chains; check quality of condition and ensure they are securely attached

-          Lights and SMV sign; make sure safety features are functional and fully visible

-          General lubrication points; ensure all are functional and greased prior to start time (track wheels, auger hinge area, PTO vertical auger bearing, etc.)

-          Tarp; make sure there are no tears or wear spots, ensure that it rolls easily and has accurate tension when closed.
