  • Flanders Truck Dealership Highlights 3 Interesting Facts About Semi-Trucks

From online shopping deliveries to providing produce at the grocery store, semi-trucks are involved in nearly every aspect of our daily lives. According to the knowledgeable team at Hoover Truck & Bus Centers, a leading truck dealership in Flanders, NJ, the trucking industry is far more interesting than most individuals realize. Below, these specialists share their favorite facts about big rigs.

3 Interesting Semi-Truck Facts From Your Local Truck Dealership

    1. Invention

The first big rig was originally developed to meet the needs of the automotive industry. In 1898, Alexander Winton designed a semi-truck to haul his automobiles to buyers and car dealerships. The Winton Motor Carriage Company would later be sold to General Motors®, but the design made its impact on manufacturers across the country. While the first model has undergone many improvements over the last century, the basic concept is still very apparent in the design of modern 18-wheelers seen in truck dealerships around the country.

    2. Name

While the first variation was called an "automobile hauler", the term "semi-truck" evolved as a result of the trailer. Full trailers are equipped with two axles, but they're not often used for over-the-road hauling because they're challenging to control, especially when they’re in reverse. Semi-trailers are called so as a result of only having one axle or set of axles, and the attachment of "semi" was quickly extended to the trucks that haul them.

    3. Number

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there are over 2.7 million registered semi-trucks in the U.S. There are also around 5.9 million commercial truck drivers, including on-the-road and local operators. In total, big rigs traveled nearly 300 billion miles in 2015, which translates to roughly 9% of total road travel in the country.

Semi-trucks are a vital component of the transportation of modern products and goods. If you own a trucking company, turn to Hoover Truck & Bus Centers in Flanders, NJ for a wide selection of reliable vehicles. Servicing the Tri-State area, they offer big rig sales, truck parts, and repairs.
